One Word Film Project
Last week, Matias and I completed our One Word Film project. Matias was my partner all throughout the creation of the short film. In the film, we had to utilize shots and camera angles to tell a short story about a singular word that we randomly picked from a hat. The word that we randomly chose was "arrogant". The directions stated that we cannot have sound and that it had to have a runtime of about 60 to 90 seconds. It must take place in the reality of 60 and 90 seconds, so that direction ruled out montages.
Before we got our word, my partner and I had to read the directions. Then, when we got our word, we immediately went to brainstorming. We had a few ideas before landing on an idea of competition. At first, we wanted to do a competition between two friends, trying to see how many marshmellows they can stuff in their mouth, with one character being arrogant and eating so much that he actually throws up. But, we inevitably changed it to chugging water bottles, rather than eating marshmellows. After that, we came up with a brief shot list, then a full storyboard. The storyboard helped organize our ideas by visualizing the scene before we even filmed, which helped the production remain smooth.
We went filming for about 45 minutes during one class, but, we couldn't film all of the scenes in time. But, we did get all of the important scenes that we needed. Later that week, we had to film a little bit during lunch, but it was fine because the shots that we did need to film during that time did not take long and were relatively simple.
For post-production, we used Adobe Premier Pro, which helped us edit quickly, whilst maintaining proffessional looks for our footage. Editing took about an hour, but, I previously had editing experience which significantly helped me during this project.
If I had to do this project again, I would spend more time planning and in the pre-production stage. I feel as though I could have planned better so we wouldn't have to film in two days. I also feel as though our shot variety could have been improved. My partner and I used a lot of shot/counter-shot, which I feel as though it was overdone. But, overall, I felt as though the project was shot well and the acting enhance our plot. The tone set for this film was intended to be comical and funny, which I though we nailed perfectly. Overall, I feel as though our project could have been imporved, but, I am still proud of the final product.
